We talk today with Kyle Shold about his comic The Prevailist in which Tyrel Helm stands alone against the crushing onset of an increasingly controlled nation. The first chapter of The Prevailist finds him in a nationalized forest of Washington where no man is to enter. Tyrel has come here for quiet independence under the watch of no one. Two others have come here as well. They’re less than quiet and less than independent. He’s soon on the run, and hunted by mechanical Terra-Rangers as a criminal. With his back pressed against a now chained expanse of freedom, he’s left with little other than his survivalist skills and a bola whip to defend himself. They don’t stand a chance.
