Amazon Expected to Announce Kindle Fire 2 at Event Today

“The Kindle Fire has allowed Amazon to grab ahold of roughly 14% of the tablet market, an impressive percentage when you consider just how lucrative the new market is quickly becoming.”

At an event Thursday in Santa Monica California, Amazon is expected to announce updates to their Kindle line. The Kindle, an e-Reader device first introduced by Amazon back in 2007 is currently in its fourth edition. The event, hosted by amazon, is set to begin at 10:30 am PDT Thursday morning, and will be centered largely around the expected set of announcements. Though details are sparse, the main announcement is expected to be the release of the latest iteration of Kindle Fire, a mini-tablet version of the regular Kindle. The Kindle Fire 2, expected to be priced at $199, will include such features a new processor, advanced touch screen technology and a new operating system.

The expected announcement will plunge Amazon even deeper into the fiercely fought battle for market supremacy among tablet products. Though Amazon has done reasonably well in the tablet market, Apple’s iPad line has towered over the competition since its unveiling in 2010. Much of the reason Kindle has been able to hold its own against the iPad has been its relatively smaller size and similarly smaller price. All of that could change though, with the rumored upcoming release of the iPad Mini in October, a smaller version of the iPad that would be competitively priced against the Kindle. Once released, the Kindle Fire 2 will have to perform not only against the iPad Mini, but also Google’s Nexus 7 and Barnes and Nobles’ Nook. Experts says that Amazon’s performance in this competitive market will be dependent largely upon the quantity and quality of the Kindle Fire 2’s features. Even if it fails in comparison though, as of the 2011 holiday season, the Kindle Fire has allowed Amazon to grab ahold of roughly 14% of the tablet market, an impressive percentage when you consider just how lucrative the new market is quickly becoming.

Among other expected announcements at tomorrow’s press conference are a new line of Kindle e-Readers as well as the latest iteration of the Kindle Touch. The latest version of the Kindle Touch is rumored to include “Paperwhite, a new, front-lit-screen feature that will allow the Amazon to compete with the Nook Simple Touch’s similar feature GlowLight.

In other Amazon related news, the company has recently announced a new deal struck with video-on-demand service Epix. The three-year deal will add hundreds of movies and television shows to Amazon’s streaming video service, which is available at no charge for Amazon Prime members. Among the noted titles that will be added as a result of this deal are “The Avengers,” “Thor,” and “The Hunger Games.”
