Ubisoft Acquires THQ Montreal and “South Park: The Stick of Truth”
Ubisoft has just announced that it has acquired THQ Montreal as well as the publishing rights for the video game “South Park: The Stick of Truth.” The game is stilling being developed by an outside company Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidian is best known for their blockbuster “Fallout: New Vegas” ”South Park: The Stick of Truth” is still scheduled for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on March 5, 2013. Super excited about that!
Yannis Mallat, president of Ubisoft Montreal seems excited about this move in a statement he made saying “This deal adds experienced developers to our internal creative teams at a key moment in the cycle of the video game industry.”
In addition to the team at THQ Montreal, Ubisoft also acquired a new, yet-to-be announced IP in development at the studio. All we know about this title is a possible name of “Underdog.” I’m guessing it’s not the lovable pooch. It sounds like they all win and everyone makes it out like bandits because THQ has been having a lot of financial trouble you know the whole going bankrupt thing. No hard numbers or figures yet on this purchase but it does look like this acquisition has no material impact on Ubisoft’s current fiscal year (2012/13). It’s believed the deal was for about 2.5 million – 3.6 Million dollars. There is still no news about the recently bankrupt THQ and their other IP’s like “Metro”, “Company of Heroes” and “Saints Row” but we will update you as soon as we know more.
THQ Montreal will be joining the second-largest in-house development staff in the world, Ubisoft has 26 studios in 19 countries and more than 6,250 people dedicated to video game production.
